Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey, founded in 1138, was a frequent target for invading border armies.

Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey, founded in 1138, was a frequent target for invading border armies.

Today, there is a cloister and herb garden to explore, and a visitor centre containing 8th century carvings and artefacts excavated from the abbey grounds.

Highlights

  • The choir and transepts – a rare survival in Scotland of early 12th-century Romanesque architecture.
  • The nave – still with the power to impress those crossing into Scotland from England, 800 years after it was built.
  • The west front – a magnificent example of late 12th-century Gothic architecture.
  • The cloister – mostly stone footings, but remarkably complete, with a reinstated cloister garden.
  • The artefacts on display in the visitor centre – including the remarkable ‘Jedburgh Comb’ and part of an 8th-century shrine.
  • A computer-based virtual tour is available in the exhibition centre and free audio tours available to use on-site in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
