Tantallon Castle

Seat of the Douglas Earls of Angus, one of the most powerful baronial families in Scotland

Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle is a formidable stronghold that stands on a cliff overlooking the Firth of Forth. It was the seat of the Douglas Earls of Angus, one of the most powerful baronial families in Scotland.

Tantallon served as a fortification for more than three centuries and endured three major sieges.

Visitors can enjoy a fantastic view from the battlements, admire wild flowers in season and soak up the history of the last of the grand medieval castles. Refreshments are available in the visitor centre.

Highlights

  • The stunning location – on a high cliff edge overlooking the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock.
  • The mighty stone curtain wall – absolutely the best castle architecture of the 1300s anywhere in Scotland.
  • The replica gun in the east tower – an exact reproduction of the kind of gun that would have been used to defend the castle against James IV in 1491 and James V in 1528.
  • The wildlife – rare flora and fauna inhabit the large promontory.
  • The castle has recently been the focus of archaeological investigation, adding to our knowledge about it.
