Rothesay Castle

Castle with a long and close association with the Stewart Kings of Scotland

Rothesay Castle

Built to an unusual circular plan, Rothesay Castle had a long and close association with the Stewart Kings of Scotland.

Highlights

  • The curtain wall – unique in Scotland in being circular. The four projecting towers were added after the Norwegian siege of 1263.
  • The great hall in the gatehouse – restored in 1900 and now containing displays about the castle and its royal owners.
  • The moat – a good way to view the stone curtain wall – and the ducks.
