Kildrummy Castle

Fine example of a 13th century castle

Kildrummy Castle

The great castle of Kildrummy was the stronghold of the Earls of Mar.

Although ruined, it remains a fine example of a 13th century castle with its curtain wall, four round towers, hall and chapel.

Highlights

  • The location – majestically set in the wilds of Strathdon.
  • The twin-towered gatehouse – possibly a legacy of Edward I of England and his favourite builder, Master James of St George.
  • The chapel windows – three elegant lancets of mid-13th-century date.
