Inchcolm Abbey

The best-preserved group of monastic buildings in Scotland

Inchcolm Abbey

David I established a priory here which became an abbey in 1235. It is now the best-preserved group of monastic buildings in Scotland.

The island is famed for its seals, wildlife and coastal defences from two World Wars.

Highlights

  • The abbey’s dramatic location – best appreciated from the boat as it docks at the island.
  • The medieval stone screens inside the belltower – rare survivals of medieval church fixtures.
  • The 13th-century wall-painting – rare medieval fresco.
  • The cloister – remarkably complete and perfectly conveying the atmosphere of monastic life.
