The 12th century fortified residence of Aberdour was extended by the Douglases in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.

It boasts a delightful walled garden and terraces with beehive-shaped dovecot.


  • The castle complex – a large and imposing suite of buildings ranging from the 12th to the 17th century.
  • The 12th-century hall-house – arguably the oldest standing stone castle in Scotland.
  • The painted ceiling in the east range – a precious survival from the early 17th century.
  • The 16th/17th-century gardens – walk through the fragrant walled garden and along the terraces overlooking the Forth and imagine the noble life of long ago.
  • St Fillan’s – don’t forget to visit this lovingly-restored 12th-century Norman church.
