St Andrews Castle

The main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews

St Andrews Castle

St Andrews Castle was the chief residence of the bishops, and later archbishops, of St Andrews. They were Scotland’s leading churchmen, and lived in a manner reflecting their exalted status. They also had to be prepared to defend themselves and the property of the Church – hence their strong castle.

During its 450-year history, the castle served as episcopal palace, fortress and state prison. It was also the setting for many important events.

Highlights

  • The Mine and Countermine – these unique underground passages give visitors a palpable sense of medieval siege warfare.
  • The Bottle Dungeon – one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless hole, and Cardinal Beaton’s murdered body was kept here.
  • The Hamilton Façade – an impressive frontage that is a testimony to the wealth and taste of its builder.
  • The view out to sea over the jagged rocky coast.
