Rowallan Castle
Rowallan Castle is a nationally important scheduled monument protected under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. It is privately owned but has been in the guardianship of Scottish Ministers, through Historic Scotland and its predecessors, since 1950. Any alterations to the castle require scheduled monument consent from Historic Scotland.
Current Position
On 1 September 2006 the owner applied for consent to bring the monument back into residential use. Following careful consideration Historic Scotland decided the case had not been made. In May 2007, Historic Scotland notified the applicant that it was minded to refuse an application for scheduled monument consent for the proposed works.
The applicant chose to exercise his statutory right to have the application referred to an independent Reporter, who heard the case at a public local inquiry in April 2008.
On January 12, 2009, Scottish Ministers announced the decision to refuse scheduled monument consent.

Background
A previous application for scheduled monument consent was refused by Scottish Ministers in July 2003, following a public local inquiry.
As a property in the care of Scottish Ministers the public may visit Rowallan Castle, by prior arrangement.
The applicant has appeared before the Scottish Government Petitions Committee to discuss the current application before Scottish Ministers.
