Castle Tioram

Castle Tioram
Castle Tioram in Moidart is a nationally important scheduled monument protected under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Area Act 1979. It is privately owned. Any alterations to the castle would require scheduled monument consent from Historic Scotland.

Current Position

There is currently no application for scheduled monument consent for Castle Tioram with Historic Scotland.

Statement of Cultural Significance

Historic Scotland, in agreement with the owner, commissioned the Scottish castles expert Geoffrey Stell to research and write a detailed statement of cultural significance for Castle Tioram in 2006. This will inform any future decisions taken on the castle.

The statement was considered by the Historic Scotland Board on August 21, 2006. The views of the Board are contained in the letter sent to the owner.

Background

On 22 February 1999 the owner applied for consent to bring the monument back into residential use. Following careful consideration Historic Scotland decided the case had not been made. In April 1999, Historic Scotland notified the applicant that it was minded to refuse the application for scheduled monument consent for the proposed works.

The applicant chose to exercise his statutory right to have the application referred to an independent Reporter. The Reporter recommended refusal and Scottish Ministers took the decision to reject the application in 2002.
