Primary Science Day at Stanley Mills
Primary school teachers discovered how to take a cross curricular approach to teaching science and technology at a ‘Primary Science’ day organised by the Association for Science Education (ASE) Tayside branch and hosted by the Education Officer at Stanley Mills on 6th February 2010.
Delegates took part in sessions and discussions that highlighted the resources and workshops on offer including the Waterwheel Challenge, where they built and tested model waterwheels, and the Archaeologists at Work workshop, where they undertook a survey of the top floor of the Bell Mill.
The day was opened by Dr George Gray from HMIE, who encouraged teachers to adopt a cross curricular approach to science and to look for opportunities to present science in context - like those on offer at Stanley Mills. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with responses such as:
“Fabulous – children would really feel like they were taking part in a place of work and feel the challenge was their own. I thoroughly enjoyed it – cross curricular and covered all four Curriculum for Excellence areas”
“Great fun building the waterwheel – given me ideas/inspiration for using K’Nex lying unused at school”
