Travel Subsidy Scheme

School activity class
The travel subsidy is offered to schools to provide financial assistance with transportation costs between your school and the property you want to visit.

The subsidy is available all year round for all sites apart from Edinburgh and Stirling Castle where application can only be made for visits between September and April inclusive.

The subsidy can be used either for free teacher led visits or include a charged activity taken as part of our added-value schools programme.


Who can apply?

Any Scottish school can apply. Funding is limited and therefore not guaranteed.

Application criteria

  • The visit must be for a genuine educational purpose
  • Applications must be made at least 10 days prior to a visit
  • Priority will be given to schools in areas with high indicators of multiple deprivation in accordance with the Scottish Government's Multiple Deprivation Index

Visits can be
  • free and teacher-led or taken as part of our schools programme (charged).

How much money is available?

75% of transportation costs up to a maximum of £200 will be covered.

How to apply

Firstly, please telephone our booking staff on 0131 668 8793/8736 to discuss availability and make a provisional booking:
  • Inform staff at time of booking that you are applying for a travel subsidy
  • Obtain a quote from your bus company for the travel costs. Please note, you must have this quote before you can proceed in your application.

Receiving the subsidy

After your visit, please send a copy of the bus company invoice to the above address.

75% of the total cost (up to a maximum of £200) will be reimbursed to the school within 28 days of receipt of the invoice.
