Scotland has a wealth of beautiful landscapes and gardens, many of which can be visited. Our online Inventory provides details of their locations along with full descriptions of each site.

These gardens and landscapes are valuable assets at national, regional and local level.

As well as being part of the scenery of Scotland and helping to attract tourism, they

• illustrate unique artistic talent
• include some of the finest gardens in the world
• house valuable and rare plant collections
• are an important historic and educational resource
• reflect social and economic change
• are a rich haven for wildlife
• protect undisturbed habitats
• incorporate Sites of Special Scientific interest.

Unfortunately, there are many threats to the survival of these gardens and landscapes, often through inappropriate development such as road building, new industry or housing.

Historic Scotland focuses on safeguarding this invaluable resource for future generations allowing them to enjoy the beauty of our nation's landscapes and gardens.
