Conserving Scotland's Retail Buildings Seminar

View of a traditional shop front
A One Day Seminar examining shop architecture, materials and current issues.

The Lighthouse, Glasgow
Monday 22nd September 2008
9.00am - 4.15pm

Retail buildings make a significant contribution to Scottish townscapes both in terms of their aesthetic value and also as part of the social and cultural history of a place. Increasingly however, there is concern about the loss of traditional shopfronts and the impact that this may have in eroding the character of town centres.

This seminar brings together for the first time, leading experts involved in the conservation of Scotland’s historic retail buildings. The morning session will examine both the historical context and technical issues including the role of pioneering materials such as cast iron and vitrolite. The afternoon session will consider the current challenges faced in protecting and conserving these important buildings.

The topics being discussed will appeal to planners, conservation officers, surveyors and architects as well as to those involved in conservation-led regeneration schemes.
