get involved in archaeology
There are lots of ways to get involved with Scottish archaeology, whatever your age or experience. All round the country there are clubs and societies that organise talks, surveys, excavations and other activities to cater for all interests. Some give people the chance to help unlock the secrets of the past by volunteering to take part in archaeological projects. Others arrange lectures and visits which let you meet experts in all kinds of fascinating subjects and to see some of Scotland’s many fascinating sites.
Find out more
It’s easy to find out more about getting involved with archaeology. One of the best starting points is the
Council for Scottish Archaeology (CSA) which exists to encourage wider interest in the subject. It provides fact sheets and links to many different organisations.
The CSA is also involved with the
Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC), a nationwide network for eight to 16-year-olds.
There are a variety of other national bodies dedicated to archaeological research in Scotland. The most senior of these is the
Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
Local groups
There are also clubs and societies and umbrella groups dedicated to particular regions, including:
Underwater
Scotland has a long and rich maritime past and its waters contain many thousands of wrecks and other archaeological sites.
The Nautical Archaeology Society, which has a Scottish training centre, provides courses and activities for those wanting to get involved in this exciting area of research.
Events
One of the best ways to get involved with archaeology is through Scottish Archaeology Month.
Each September there are dozens of activities across the country run and supported by a variety of bodies, including Historic Scotland. Scottish Archaeology Month is organised by the CSA.
Other annual events include Highland Archaeology Fortnight and Perthshire Archaeology Month.
Historic Scotland events
Historic Scotland organises events and activities for adults and children throughout the year. Details of these are given in the
events section of our website.
