Stirling Castle's busy Christmas events programme continues this weekend with two very different festive highlights. On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th, Christmas for the Queen – a series of special costumed performances - offers a taste of the seasonal celebrations of 1546. Visitors will be able to see period food being prepared, find out about the favourite Christmas celebration dishes of the 16th century and how they have influenced those we still enjoy today.

Historic Scotland has launched a new book which looks at the rich architectural heritage of Scotland’s hospitals and how it has evolved over the centuries. Building up our Health: the architecture of Scotland’s historic hospitals shows how hospital architecture has adapted over the centuries in response to medical advances, changing philosophies and the necessities of the day. The book closes with a look at their continued evolution to a sustainable future.

Historic Scotland has issued a list of Scotland’s important battlefields, to be known as ‘The Inventory of Historic Battlefields’. The first phase of the Inventory contains 17 battlefields considered to be of national importance for the contribution they make to Scotland’s archaeology and history. They include the most significant and iconic battlefields and provide information to aid their protection, management, interpretation and promotion.

Historic Scotland has published a new book, The Picts, which aims to tell the  story of the Picts in simple and accessible terms, from their origins in the 3rd century AD to their eventual absorption into the new nation of Alba around the 10th century.
