Each wedding is unique.

We are delighted to discuss your requirements and assist you in making your special event a memorable occasion. The following basic guidelines should be considered when planning a wedding ceremony or reception at our sites.

How long can I hold a booking without obligation?

Historic Scotland will hold a provisional booking for a specific date on behalf of a client for a maximum of four weeks. The client is asked to complete a confirmation form with details of the event to confirm the booking. Written acknowledgement of the booking will be sent to the client upon receipt of a confirmed booking.

Can I bring my own caterer?

When hiring a property for a wedding reception, all clients must use the caterers contracted by Historic Scotland.

When is my payment due?

Full payment is paid to your chosen site on confirmation.

What do I get for my money?

The fee quoted is for
  • use of an area within the monument according to the wedding event booked and
  • the wedding package on-site (chairs, flower stands, altar table), where applicable.
The monument and grounds are available as a backdrop for wedding photography and a drinks reception area is included to serve a celebratory drink after the wedding ceremony.

Access to the monument is restricted to one bridal party per day.

Note - The exception to the above is Edinburgh Castle where access is not restricted to one wedding party per day.

Do I have exclusive use of the venue?

The site will remain open to daytime visitors whilst your wedding is in progress, although visitors will be asked to respect your privacy. However, no inconvenience should be caused to other visitors of the site.

Exceptions to this are:
  • Gatehouse Suite and Queen Anne Building in Edinburgh Castle which are available for exclusive use
  • the monuments available for evening reception hire.

What are the maximum capacities at each venue?

Each venue has a total capacity listed eg 60 guests to include everyone in attendance - bridal party, minister, musicians and wedding guests.

Who sets up the room for my wedding ceremony?

It is the responsibility of the wedding party to set up the required equipment at least 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.

Please check in advance with the monument manager to confirm what equipment is supplied on-site. Setting up time cannot be guaranteed the previous day as the site may be in use. The area should be left clean and tidy after use.

Exceptions to this are Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castles which have their own on-site co-ordinators.

Is smoking permitted?

Smoking is not allowed in any of the historical apartments available for hire from Historic Scotland.

Is confetti permitted?

It is not permissible to throw confetti at any of the sites. This also includes bio-degradable products and rose petals. A suggested alternative is to use bubbles.

Are candles permitted?

The use of candles is not permitted at any of the sites.

Do your properties permit Civil Partnership ceremonies?

Historic Scotland welcomes Civil Partnership Ceremonies at Castle Campbell, Edinburgh Castle Gatehouse Suite, Edinburgh Castle Queen Anne Room, Huntingtower Castle, Linlithgow Palace, Urquhart Castle, Doune Castle and Aberdour Castle. Each venue offers a beautiful and unique setting for your ceremony and photography:
