The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 requires Scottish public authorities to produce and maintian a publication scheme. Authorities are under a legal obligation to:

  • Publish the classes of information they make routinely available
  • Tell the public how to access the information and what it might cost

Historic Scotland has adopted the Model Publication Scheme 2012 produced by the Scottish Information Commissioner. This has been approved until 31st May 2016.

You can see this scheme on the Commissioner's website at or by contacting us at the address shown on this page.

The Scheme commits Historic Scotland to:

  • Publishing the information, including the environmenta information, that it holds and which falls within the classes of information.
  • Producing a guide for the public to that information.

Historic Scotland guide to information

Historic Scotland has produced a guide to the information it publishes through the scheme. The purpose of this guide to information is to:

  • Allow the public to see what information is availabile (and what is not available) in relation to each class.
  • State what charges may be applied.
  • Explain how to find the information easily.
  • Provide contact details for enquiries and to get help with accessing the information.
  • Explain how to request information that has not been published.

You can view this guide to information here

Where possible, information published under this guide is made available to download directly from this website in Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf).

We will continue to update the information in the guide and review it on a regular basis.

A hard copy of the Scheme can be obtained by writing to the Freedom of Information Officer.
