Propose a site for assessment or review
Anyone can propose a garden or designed landscape for inclusion on the Inventory, request a review of an existing Inventory site or ask for an existing Inventory site to be removed from the Inventory. Proposals need to be on our form and can be sent by email or post.

For commercial, local authority or public bodies, please contact the Listing and Designed Landscapes team in advance.
We need you to fill in our proposal form and include with it information about the location and ownership of the site together with current photographs. Please provide supporting information about why the site should be included or removed from the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. Details about any planned change to the garden or designed landscape would also be helpful.
If there are reasons why we should prioritise your proposal you must make this clear on the proposal form.
How long does it take to assess a proposal?
We will aim to provide you with an initial view* within 6 months and a final view within 8 months. For very large or complex sites, we aim to provide an initial view within 9 months and a final view within 12 months.
Some stages of the process can be outwith our control and take longer than expected. Organising a site visit, particularly where there are multiple landowners, as well as the consultation period, can be the most time-consuming parts of the assessment.
You will be assigned an individual case officer for your proposal. We will not issue you with regular updates for your case but you can contact your nominated case officer at any time to ask about progress. There may be rare occasions when we need to prioritise urgent cases and non-urgent assessments will be delayed. If you are affected by this we will let you know.
* An initial view is where we have formed an opinion as to whether the garden or designed landscape meets the criteria for Inventory status or not before we consult with others about this view. Consultation is not always required but is principally for new Inventory sites.The feedback from consultation informs our final view on the merit of a site for inclusion on the Inventory.

Once we receive a proposal, we research the site and we will usually undertake a site visit. The aim of the research is to inform our assessment of the site against the criteria for determining national importance (see pages 81-82 of the Scottish Historic Environment Policy
As part of the research phase, we consider a wide range of sources. This can take a number of weeks. If we find that the site does not meet the criteria for the Inventory we will write to the relevant parties at this stage.
Following research, we evaluate the garden or designed landscape and reach an interim decision on its merit for the Inventory. If we find that it may be of national interest we prepare a draft Inventory description and boundary map. The local authority is then consulted along with the owners, where possible. For potential new sites, we also normally consult with an independent third party.
If we find that an existing Inventory garden or designed landscape no longer meets the criteria we will consult about its removal with the local authority and owners. We will also consult if we propose any change to the designation boundary of an existing Inventory site.
The consultation period is usually 21 days. For more complex sites or larger projects this stage can take longer.
Following consultation we consider the responses and make a final decision about whether to include the garden or designed landscape in the Inventory, amend the record f an existing Inventory entry or remove a site from the Inventory. Owners, local authorities and relevant third parties will be informed of the outcome of the case.
