The Fragments Project

Fragments is a new and highly original two year arts and music project based in the Scottish Borders and inspired by the recent discovery of the Hawick Missal Fragment, a 12th century medieval liturgical manuscript.

Through an investigation of the fragment, its original use and its wider context, the project aims to help participants create new work on the theme of art and music as an expression of ‘the divine’.

Over the course of two years, the project will build and develop through a sequence of workshops, web postings and art interventions which will all be set around a series of three large public events held at historic sites in the Borders. Each of these events will be focused around three newly commissioned pieces of music, all directly inspired by the original music of the fragment.

The project will involve specialists in music, history and other arts disciplines. They will work closely with groups and individuals across the Borders to raise awareness of the historic significance of the manuscript fragment and its relationship to the history of the Borders and its contemporary life.

The project is a partnership between Historic Scotland and the Heritage Hub in Hawick supported with funding from Creative Scotland.
