What is the Inventory?

Recognising that battlefields are a distinctive aspect of our historic environment, Scottish Ministers announced in Scottish Historic Environment Policy, that Historic Scotland would prepare an Inventory of Historic Battlefields that identifies and provides information on our most important battlefields to aid their management into the future.

The Inventory of Historic Battlefields is a list of nationally important battlefields in Scotland that meet the criteria published in SHEP.  It provides information on the sites in it to raise awareness of their significance and assist in their protection and management for the future.  It is a major resource for enhancing the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of battlefields, for promoting education and stimulating further research, and for developing their potential as attractions for visitors.
