Historic Scotland sponsor Sunday Mail Young Scot Heritage award

Ian Walford was on hand at the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards recently to present the Heritage award, which Historic Scotland was sponsoring for the eighth year.

This year’s winners were the members of Connect Project, Voluntary Action Orkney aged 16-19 who devote their free time to preserving some of Scotland’s most valuable history – the memories and lives of some of the older generation.

Through the befriending project the team visit four sheltered housing schemes and learn about traditions and experiences from older people that might have been lost. The group do memory boxes, flower arranging, photography of local heritage sites, tea dances, music, Orcadian dialect and baking.

On receiving the award Dan Clewett said, “We are over the moon with our award. It’s important young people believe in preserving Scotland’s history and we hope, by coming along today and telling our story, others will be encouraged to act too.”

Members of the Connect Project are pictured with Ian Walford with some of the cast from River City at the event, which was held on the 10th of April at Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium.
