Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site Management Plan 2014-19 - Consultation Draft

Background

The Heart of Neolithic Orkney represents one of the richest surviving Neolithic landscapes in north-west Europe. Dating from c. 5000 years ago its impressive domestic and ritual monuments are masterpieces of Neolithic design and construction and give us exceptional insights into the society, skills and spiritual beliefs of the people who built them. In 1999 it was inscribed on the World Heritage List.

In accordance with UNESCO guidelines, following inscription a Management Plan was agreed by the partners with responsibility for managing the WHS and facilitating access to it. As the 2008-13 five-year plan period has now ended, the guidelines require a new five-year plan to be drafted and adopted.
