Fellowship and Internship Programme

Our Fellowship and Internship programme helps to increase the number of individuals who have skills and knowledge of built heritage in Scotland by allowing appropriately experienced individuals the opportunity to work with an experienced mentor or institution.

Our programme has been running for over a decade and has an international reputation.

Many past participants have gone on to become an integral part of the built heritage conservation, repair and maintenance community in Scotland.

Available programmes

Craft fellowships are based around the built heritage and are directly related to Historic Scotland’s core business. This might typically involve masonry, carpentry or lime working.

Who is eligible?
The Craft Fellowship is tailored to suit specific disciplines but generally takes participants from a recognised conservation background or tradesmen and women who have the potential to extend their existing skill base.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for their field and a high level of craft potential.

Duration
The duration is normally two years.


Teaching fellowships provide experienced practitioners the opportunity to further develop their experience in a particular area, and develop their teaching skills with a building orientated training facility or an organisation with education at the heart of its operational activity.

Who is eligible?
Capacity building in the education (specialism) sector is a primary driver. Fellows will also normally have significant demonstrable experience or knowledge from which to build upon.

Duration
The duration is normally two years.


Research fellowships are aimed at undertaking research projects in a mentored situation to provide a beneficial learning experience, whilst undertaking work which is in itself valuable to the built heritage.

The Fellow will normally be awarded grant to undertake a specific task or subset of tasks against a common theme.

Who is eligible?
The background of the Fellow will be dictated on a project by project basis but they are likely to have some experience of research at postgraduate level.

Duration
The duration is normally two years.


These studentships are mentored by the the Technical Conservation Group Conservation Centre in the specialist conservation field, focusing on stone, paint and in the preventative conservation – science fields, often with an external academic partner.

Who is eligible?
Interns will have some specialist knowledge appropriate to the discipline on which to conduct an active piece of research. Studentships will also require appropriate discipline - specific learning.

Duration
Duration is one to two years depending on the specific research topic.

Adverts for Fellowships and Internships are placed locally in newspapers, discipline-specific websites, training colleges and appropriate journals throughout the year. The Historic Scotland Conservation Bureau handles applications and initial enquiries.

Grants

Grants are made via the Conservation Group. The level of the bursary is re-assessed annually, and in relation to the discipline, type of Fellowship and specific circumstances.
