The Blackhouse, Arnol

A traditional, fully furnished, Lewis thatched house that provides a unique insight into island life.

There is also an attached barn, byre and stackyard. Beside the Blackhouse, a furnished 1920s whitehouse can also be seen. Visitor centre with interpretative displays explaining the history of the site and locally-made crafts.

Highlights

  • The reek of peat – even today the peat fire at the heart of the blackhouse is never allowed to go out.
  • The cosy box-beds – in the bedroom, and still with their fabrics and furnishings.
  • The byre – just as it was left in 1966, but without the cows.
  • The white house – a wonderful contrast to the black house.
