The Chain Mail

Welcome to The Chain Mail - a visitor’s guide to the sights and sounds of Historic Scotland

5000 Years of Scottish History in your Pocket!

Our new app has been ‘wild’ for a few weeks now and we’re overwhelmed with the response from our visitors!

If you haven’t seen it, our mobile app, available on iPhone and Android, gives you the opportunity to get inspiration for great days out at our attractions and events across Scotland. Our colleagues south of the Border had already made a similar app available which I had used on various holidays, and it was obvious that there was a gap in the market in Scotland.

Finding out what Historic Scotland sites are ‘near you now’ was an essential requirement (especially for me, with no sense of direction!) as well as the handy regional lists of our sites. However, we wanted to set this app apart from the rest by truly representing all the fascinating stories and fun experiences attached to our sites.  As a result you can search for sites by theme (looking for the best sites for peace and quiet? The app has some suggestions!), and we will be updating the content on a regular basis to give you a flavour of what you can discover – itineraries, stories and sneak peeks behind the scenes are all to follow over the coming months.

You can also keep up to date with all Historic Scotland social media channels in our ‘social buzz’ section (as long as you are connected to the internet – perhaps a challenge at some of our more remote sites, but useful for planning before you leave home!). Please let us know what you think and what you’d like to see in future updates – and let us know how you use the app this summer!

Please remember the app is only available on iPhone and Android smartphones.  Read more on downloading our new app.

Your description does not describe history of sites being included on this app. Is this on the app?
